Is your large-part project facing these constraints?

When machine selection is shaped by several of these conditions at once, a two-platen platform is worth evaluating.

  • Large molds are limiting machine and plant layout options
  • Deep parts or molds require a longer opening stroke
  • Heavier molds demand more from platen support and clamping stability
  • Crane or ceiling height restricts overhead loading of large molds
  • Mold size or opening needs are forcing you into a larger machine

If these conditions are shaping your selection, a two-platen machine is worth evaluating — judged together with clamping tonnage, mold space, opening stroke, mold weight, shot size and output targets.

Do large molds always have to be loaded from above?

When crane height, ceiling height or mold size restricts overhead loading, NRH offers an optional tie-bar pullout so large molds can be loaded from the side.

What is tie-bar pullout? Normally a large mold must be lowered vertically past the tie bars from above; with limited crane or ceiling height, or a very large mold, this becomes difficult. With the patented tie-bar pullout (Utility Model Patent M481124), the clamping-side tie bars can retract from the mold area, allowing large molds to be inserted from the side when overhead loading is restricted. The mold area also becomes easier to access for installation and maintenance.

Tie-bar pullout is optional equipment and not standard on all NRH models; please confirm the actual configuration with our engineering team.

What engineering keeps large molds stable?

For heavy molds, how the tie bars are supported and how the moving platen slides and aligns directly affect long-term stability and wear. These patented NRH mechanisms address those needs.

Why clamping design matters for large molds

As mold weight and projected area increase, how clamping force is built and how the platens take the load both affect long-run production stability.

Four direct-pressure clamping cylinders build clamping force directly and distribute it evenly across the mold, helping reduce uneven platen loading and mold wear.

Four synchronized double half-nuts work with the two-platen clamping sequence to build high clamping force quickly, helping reduce mold stress during continuous production.

The actual configuration still depends on the part, mold weight, projected area and molding conditions.

What else matters for long production runs?

Choosing a large machine is not only about whether it can mold the part — long-term structural load, maintainability and downtime risk matter too.

NRH high-load structure: 3D model and Nastran structural analysis

HUARONG uses 3D modeling and Nastran structural analysis to optimize high-load structures, and evaluates large-machine design against long-term operation and maintenance needs.

Peak improvements from structural analysis

Using Nastran computer-aided analysis to optimize the NRH structure, the peak improvement in front platen strength was +18% and in moving platen strength +12%.

+18% Peak front platen strength improvement
+12% Peak moving platen strength improvement

These are peak values from structural analysis, not overall machine strength gains.

How can mold changes and maintenance stay manageable?

NRH keeps mold loading, changeover and maintenance flexible by design. For the optional tie-bar pullout, see Do large molds always have to be loaded from above? above.

Fast Fully-Automatic Mold-Height Adjustment

Automatic mold-height adjustment improves mold-adjustment efficiency by more than 50% compared with program-controlled adjustment, reducing mold changeover time.

Removable Safety Doors

Eases inspection and maintenance work on large machines, improving service accessibility.

Externally Adjustable Structure

The inner supporting sliding module can be adjusted from the outside, reducing the risk of entering the machine frame for service.

NRH maintenance design focuses on reducing downtime and personnel risk while improving the long-term availability of large equipment.

Two-platen or toggle — how do you decide?

No single clamping design fits every product. The differences lie mainly in how clamping force is built and in mechanism length, so each design suits different part sizes, mold conditions and plants.

Comparison Toggle machines Two-platen machines
Clamping force Toggle machinesForce is transmitted through a toggle linkage; mature high-speed performance on small and mid-size machines Two-platen machinesFour direct-pressure clamping cylinders apply force directly
Machine length Toggle machinesLonger mechanism, larger footprint at the same tonnage Two-platen machinesMore compact — machine length reduced by approx. 20%*
Opening stroke Toggle machinesLimited by toggle travel Two-platen machinesLong opening strokes can be planned to suit the part and mold
Large-mold loading Toggle machinesLarge molds may be limited by crane height Two-platen machinesOptional tie-bar pullout improves mold loading flexibility
Maintenance Toggle machinesMore linkage parts and a more complex adjustment procedure Two-platen machinesExternally adjustable modules reduce the need to enter the frame

*Machine length compared with conventional toggle machines; the actual reduction varies by model.

The choice depends on part size, mold weight, opening needs and plant conditions — it is not a question of one being better. Toggle machines remain well suited to small-to-mid, high-speed applications; as part size, mold weight and opening stroke grow, two-platen structures usually offer more space and mold flexibility.

Common questions on large parts and two-platen machines

When should a two-platen injection molding machine be evaluated?

When a large-part project is constrained by mold size and weight, opening stroke, floor space, mold loading or long-run production stability, a two-platen injection molding machine is worth including in the evaluation.

Is clamping tonnage enough to select a machine for large molds?

No. Selecting a large injection molding machine usually also requires confirming part size, projected area, mold size and weight, opening stroke, shot size and output targets.

How can large molds be loaded when ceiling height is limited?

If a mold cannot easily be lowered from above, tie-bar pullout can be evaluated to improve mold loading flexibility. On NRH machines tie-bar pullout is optional equipment; the actual configuration depends on the model, mold and plant conditions.

What information should I prepare before asking HUARONG for NRH selection advice?

We recommend preparing part dimensions, material, part weight, projected area, mold dimensions, mold weight, mold thickness, opening requirement, shot weight and the target cycle time or output.
